For Carl, historical Torquay pottery is far more than a collection of antiques, it is a tangible connection to the artistic heart and industrial soul of South Devon. His passion began with a single piece of classic Watcombe Pottery terracotta, but quickly grew into a deep fascination with the distinct potteries that defined the region, from Watcombe and Aller Vale to Longpark and Royal Torquay. Carl was captivated by the sheer artistry baked into every vessel, the warm red Devon clay, the charming West Country 'motto ware' proverbs, the delicate scraffito, and the vibrant, handpainted slip decorations. Carl has immersed himself in the stories of the master potters and decorators whose craft turned humble coastal clay into world renowned art.
Why the Museum Was Born
Carl opened the Torquay Pottery Museum out of a steadfast commitment to heritage, preservation, and community. Realizing that vast chapters of Devon’s ceramic history were quietly slipping into obscurity, often tucked away in private attics or scattered across the globe, he set out to build a dedicated home where these treasures could be safeguarded and celebrated together. The museum exists to bring these historic pieces into the light: to offer visitors an intimate glimpse into 19th- and 20th-century pottery production, honor the working-class artisans who crafted them, and inspire a new generation to appreciate the artistry right on South Devon's doorstep. For Carl, every display is not just a showcase of pottery, but a celebration of local pride meant to be shared with the world.
